2019 and the CHANGES it will bring – PERSONALLY and BLOG-WISE

Announcement

If you don’t know by now, you must have been living underneath a rock, or simply haven’t stumbled upon my blog before today. 2019 is a year of huge changes for me and, that means, for my blog as well. I thought it was time to talk about it some more, to share my expectations and the things I want to accomplish – or try to accomplish while my life is being turned upside down.

THE CHANGES

Most of you know my boyfriend and I bought a house last year and moved right at the end of the year as well. We’ve been busy getting the house set up, but it’s been a hectic time. We’re hoping to do some more remodeling in 2019. Time will tell how that will work out since the biggest change will have a huge influence on that.

That change, of course, being the little one’s arrival. I’m due a week from now – but who really knows when he’ll decide to make an entrance, right? – so starting then, I won’t be present on my blog for quite some time. My whole life – our lives – will revolve around that little wiggle of a bundle for a while. It’ll take time for us to figure out some routine that allows us to pick up our hobbies again. Maybe it’ll work out, maybe it won’t. Just know that I’ll try my best to not let my blog disappear in the void. Actually. I’m quite set on not allowing that to happen since this blog is more than just a hobby; it’s an outlet, it’s relaxation and.. you all mean so much to me. I can’t even imagine not being a part of this community anymore! This blog will always have a special place in my heart as well so I promise I’ll be back eventually!

WHAT I PLAN ON DOING

There are different things I’m trying to stick to. The past two months, I’ve been busy writing and prepping posts for when I’m absent. I don’t want this blog to die a slow death and, honestly, I really needed the creative outlet of writing posts as well. Perfect combination, wouldn’t you say?
This means there’ll be posts popping up even when I’m not actually present on my blog or social media. I apologize in advance for not replying to your comments and such, but you can see how that might be a tad impossible with a baby and all. I know I shouldn’t really apologize for it, but I’m still doing it. Ha!

Once I’m settled, I know I’ll be back to blogging. Whether it’ll be in the amount I was these past two years is something I highly doubt. There’ll be changes. I can’t see myself posting as much as I have in the past – which was sometimes on a daily basis – but I’ll at least be trying to get out one or two posts a week. I won’t disappear on you! I refuse!

There’s also a small possibility of my blog gaining a new feature once I’m “back”. I know this is a book blog, where I sometimes – rarely, sorry.. – share recipes, but since the little one will be such a huge part of my life.. I might just be adding a bit more to this blog. I want Books & Munches to show a huge part of my life, and what better way to do that than share something as huge as becoming and being a mother? I have no clue yet how I’ll be doing this, but I’ll definitely try and figure out something. Do tell me if you have any ideas for this, or things you’d like to see / know regarding the little one!

MY BOOK BUYING HABITS

With the huge haul of 2018 – seriously, how did the universe allow me to haul a total of over 150 books? – I definitely need some strict rules regarding book buying. In any case, I’ve automatically stopped buying books impulsively since the year started. I know most of our money will go towards our house and the little one from now on, but I also feel like I should be allowed to still buy myself some things, you know? Pretty sure the boyfriend will have his occasional splurges as well, haha.

This is why I set myself some ground rules, which I’m trying to stick to for the rest of the year!
~ Only pre-order books by authors I love and / or series I’m reading.
~ Buying books I read and loved the ARC of is totally allowed – support those authors!
~ Kindle deals are allowed if the book already was on my “Want to read” on Goodreads.
~ No limit on free Kindle books because.. they’re free!
~ Special edition pre-orders of anticipated reads are allowed – after serious contemplation.
~ For every three books read, owned pre-2019, I can buy one book that doesn’t fit any of the above criteria.
~ Special anniversaries / holidays are allowed a splurge if I stuck to my rules so far.

I’m actually keeping track of this very cleanly in my reading spreadsheet so I won’t even have the opportunity to cheat! Truly, I even made sure it shows me how many “no rules” books [aka one for every three books read] I’m still allowed to buy. Know yourself, right?

Apart from that, I’m keeping an overview of how much money I’m spending on books and saving on them. By pre-ordering, but also by reading ARC’s instead of buying finished copies. I hope that’ll motivate me even more to stick to my rules but time will tell!

Do you have rules when it comes to your book buying?
What do you think of the ones I set myself? Doable? Or not?
What would you like to see regarding the little wiggle once he’s born?

  1. Hi Kathy,
This must be an exciting time for you–maybe a little nerve-wracking a bit. I haven’t been very good at commenting on blogs but I am hoping I can stop by more often. I am excited to see more of your reading and whatever else you feel becomes an interest for you. It’d be so interesting to see if your reading changes after your little baby arrives. Maybe you’ll have different favorite genres or even favorite tropes. I wonder if you’ll gravitate towards different characters and different relationships.

Anyway. I hope you have a wonderful time transitioning into this new role in your life.
Until next time, keep on shining.

    1. Hi Dina,

Thank you so much for your comment! I’m honestly quite curious to see whether or not having a baby will influence my reading in any way as well. I do think I might gravitate towards children’s books in a few years, just so I can have some more knowledge on what books to get the little one. 🙂 Other than that.. Who knows. Time will tell!

  2. I love Destiny’s title suggestion haha.

Sounds like you are planning well ahead. I was scared I’d dissapear but I ended up being able to pick blogging back up quite easily after giving birth. I hope that will be the case for you.
And oh my gosh, less than a week!

    1. Well, it took me a little less than four weeks to get back to my blog! Reading’s something else though. For some reason I’m not really able to read physical books, am annoyed by my Kindle and reading on my phone just sucks? We’ll see how that gets solved. At least I’m back to being social online and that’s doing miracles for my mental health as well, haha.

  3. Aww, cute picture! ❤️
And good luck & best wishes!

I don’t impose too many rules on myself about books, but i tend to wait with buying until the price drops to 0.99-1.99, or buy it in charity. Exceptions are books by fave authors i know will most likely never drop so much in price in the near future.

  4. I actually really like the book buying rules. This may be something I try to do. I am a college student and buying books can be expensive. Plus I live in a small apartment and need to think about my space.

  5. I only limit myself buying books now if there is a homeowners project coming up or a vacation. You guys will quickly find out, the house projects are long and the time to accomplish them is short! We remodeled an unfinished small room into a walk in closet in April 2018 and I’m STILL not completely finished with it lol.

  6. Ahhhh I’m thrilled for you and your bf!! Such exiting changes (I am the only one of my friends to not being a new mother, currently pregnant, or getting married this year) so I’m living vicariously! I love your book rules, definitely sensible but keeps you accountable! I am lucky to have a library card so I don’t have to go on a buying van, just an ARC request ban… I want this year to focus on backlog books and it really hasn’t happened yet… 😑

  7. I totally agree with Destiny! “Books & MUMches!! It would be epic. *lol*
Also, I know how much a new life can change yours and I wish you all the best with your little family! There won’t be a lot of time for yourself in the first year and you’ll have to learn to adapt to the new situation, to that new little person in your life. I can promise you that your baby is going to turn your life upside down, but it will be worth it! It’s so worth it! ❤

    1. Definitely going with something mumches for those posts, haha!

My life has definitely been turned upside down, that’s for sure! The only me-time I have right now, is when I’m able to take a long bath so those have been.. extra long lately? At least as long as I can’t hear the little guy crying. The moment I do, I can’t help but jump out and check what the hell his dad is up to, haha! Guess that’s just part of being a mom. 😛

  9. Ahhhh this is so exciting, 2019 will be such an exciting year, Kathy I wish you all the best!! ❤ ❤ I'll miss chatting with you in the comments, but I'll always find ways to bother you and / or chat with you and ask for news elsewhere, I'm sure of it 🙂
I hope you'll be able to stick to your new book-buying rules, too, you can do this!!
Sending you tons of love ❤

  10. I can’t believe it’s already almost time for the little to make his appearance into the world!! I am so excited for y’all. I can’t wait for the new posts about mommyhood.

  11. I am so freaking excited for you! A baby requires a ton of adjustment and yet, it’s all worth it in the end. Love the pic of you and the BF, you both look so happy. 🙂

Also, I’d love to hear stories about your adventures in parenting. My babies are 17 and 19 now and I kinda miss those days (although kinda not, too). And I second Destiny’s request to call the posts Books & MUMches. Hahaha.

Lastly, I try not to buy books at all. Crazy, right? But with a kid in college and a husband with a ton of medical issues, I have to cut back somewhere. So, I have my one subscription box that I pay for and, aside from the occasional splurge (like the box that arrived last night), I try to get everything from the library or used. Good luck with sticking to your rules, I’m sure you’ll do it. 🙂

    1. It’s been one hell of a time since Jamie was born, that’s for sure! I feel like I’m finally getting the hang of things a bit, but more on the “at least I know why he’s crying 99% of the time”-side than anything else. Our household / chores is a disaster but I couldn’t care less, haha.

      Thank you!

I’m going to try and get some post written and posted this month. We’ll see how it goes. And it’ll probably be something with Mumches in the title, haha! I can’t NOT use that; it’s stuck in my brain ever since Destiny called it. :’)

Yikes, I can see how that would be a very good motivation to stick to some very tight “rules” when it comes to buying books. The BF thought I’d still be able to buy tons of books since I was purposely focusing on reading my older books but I haven’t read a physical book for three weeks now so no buying books for me any time soon, hah. And in any case, I’m enjoying the baby way too much to read. [And when he’s sleeping, I’m enjoying getting back into the swing of my blog since that makes me feel more productive anyway.]

    2. That’s wonderful! Those first few days are the hardest, not knowing why he’s crying or what he needs. It’s trying and exhausting.

Enjoy the little one and I’m really happy you’re back, even if it’s only a bit here and there for now. Good luck getting your routine set and hopefully you can find some quiet time to get some reading in as well.

  12. I would love to see pics of the baby!! I think your rules are very doable. My rules are: Don’t buy books that are 2nd, 3rd in a series (I hate doing that). Only get free Kindle books. And don’t buy anything after a couple of glasses of wine!! lol.
