SYNOPSIS
Time is running out. Together, they can save the world. But are they each other’s worst nightmare?

Nova’s double life is about to get a lot more complicated:

As Insomnia, she is a full-fledged member of the Renegades, a syndicate of powerful and beloved superheroes. She works with Adrian’s patrol unit to protect the weak and maintain order in Gatlon City.

As Nightmare, she is an Anarchist—a group of villains who are determined to destroy the Renegades. Nova wants vengeance against the so-called heroes who once failed her when she needed them the most.

But as Nova, her feelings for Adrian are deepening, despite the fact that he is the son of her sworn enemies and, unbeknownst to Nova, he has some dangerous secrets of his own.

Standaard

I don’t usually post reviews on sequels on my blog, so you know that when I do.. It’s either because it was extremely good.. or extremely bad.. I’m thrilled to say Archenemies belongs to the first group because I absolutely loved the freak out of it and.. read it in no time? At all?

The good

Not that my reading pace is any kind of surprise when it comes to Meyer’s writing. I’ve noticed I tend to fly through whatever she’s written so Archenemies wasn’t really an exception at all. The day her writing doesn’t read as fluently anymore is probably the day I’ll wonder what the actual hell has happened to the world. I’m not even kidding.

Once we have total power, what’s to keep us from becoming villains ourselves?

As for the story itself.. I lost myself in it from the get-go! I remember struggling with Renegades [yikes, old reviewing format!] a bit because, you know, there’s superheroes and villains but there wasn’t all that much action going on? Archenemies totally delivered on that front though! Things kept happening and happening and happening, pulling me along on the roller coaster ride I was hoping for but kind of scared of at the same time. More because I was afraid there’d be a lack of action again but it so was not the case!

What I was looking forward most? Nova! I actually missed her. Renegades already had me thinking of her as one bad-ass female, but Archenemies made it even more so. Not to mention how real and honest she felt, even when she was playing with people – not that she had much of a choice, eh. The things she struggled with simply felt so genuine and.. is exactly what made her such a strong, grey character in my eyes.
That’s not even saying how I loved her and Adrian dancing around each other. I’m so living for their chemistry and love the way it’s slowly growing more and more while we know it’ll come to an explosion!

To know what this world could look like, what humanity could be, if only we all chose to do our best, to help others, to…to be, well, heroes.

Favorite side character? That one definitely goes to Max! He’s so precious and.. *sigh*.. Can’t he get his own story or something? I’m totally here for that. And I can’t be the only one, right?

The bad

I am leaving this beautifully blank because I don’t have anything bad to mention! Not in the slightest!

five stars
Gladly saying I’m so stoked to continue this series in the future! I can only hope the third installment – why isn’t there a title yet?! – has as much action as Archenemies gave us. And more romance. I totally want to see the way Nova and Adrian keep dancing around one another!

Have you read Renegades / Archenemies? Are you planning on it?
How do you feel about Marissa Meyer’s writing in general?
Do you know any other amazing superhero-books?

  1. Lovely review! Although I didn’t enjoy this one quite as much as you did, I’m still super excited for the sequel! The chemistry between Nova and Adrian is so sweet! I had a stupid grin plastered to my fave the whole time I read their exchanges 😂

    1. Right! I don’t think I’ve ever seen chemistry done THIS well? Often it would feel like it’s been dragging on for too long or they would’ve given in to one another way too quickly for my liking but this.. this is just.. yaaay, haha! [Although still frustrating at times because you’re still rooting for them and they just. won’t. cooperate. xD]
