Apparently Destiny @ Howling Libraries felt like torturing me by dragging me out of my comfort zone? Truly, I was thinking “Oh boy, this looks like torture” when I was reading her answers to these questions. I didn’t even know she tagged me yet at that point. Just imagine my face when I found out.
Okay, it wasn’t that bad but still. It took me a while to figure out my answers so I hope you enjoy them? Somewhat? And if not, you’re tagged already to prove you can do better, HA! [I’m obviously in a very weird mood today.. Monday’s are FUN. Not.]
THE ONE MAJOR RULE
You have to pick ONE GENRE that you frequently read about… and then, you can’t use ANY books from that genre while answering the questions!
Let the torture begin, right? When it comes to my reading, it’s honestly a toss-up between ya contemporary and ya fantasy so.. I don’t know..? Let’s make the torture even more real and go with both?
THE TORTURE
A book that is an exception when it comes to genres or elements you don’t typically like:
There is one thing that I typically don’t really like, and that’s anything history-related in books. I’ve been trying some historical fiction though, and I have to admit there are some books out there I actually ended up liking. I still haven’t figured out what aspects work and don’t work for me but some of the novels I enjoyed so far that have historical elements are A Sky Painted Gold and Stalking Jack the Ripper.
A book you enjoyed from a genre you previously held some stigma against:
Gah, this is going to sound awful for some but I have to go with The Illuminae Files on this one. I really had something against anything science fiction-related and that purely had to do with my mom’s addiction to sci-fi movies. I loathed those during my entire childhood and hated all the alien-stuff that looked so bloody and awful. In my brain, science fiction equaled aliens and gore and.. well.. let’s say I’m thrilled the entire book community hyped these books so I ended up giving them a shot myself. Even had me trying out more and more science fiction novels since! Although I’m still staying clear of the movies. Too soon.
A book you didn’t know was out of your comfort zone until you started reading it:
Well, this is an easy one and the one answer I could already think of before I even started writing this post. IT by Stephen King is the huge winner. All the bullying, abuse and.. certain other events in this book shook me to my core. I still can’t believe I actually managed to finish this book, but I did. And I’m never, ever reading it again. Ever.
Pick a friend who motivates you to pick up books you might not normally be interested in—is there a book they convinced you to give a try?
There honestly isn’t really a specific person like that? Simple reason: I’m pretty set on making up my own mind about books. If people tell me not to read a book for certain reasons, there’s more chance of me listening than the same people telling me to definitely read that book because I’ll love it for sure. I’m weird, right? No, I guess not.
A book that is out of your comfort zone, but you would like to read:
As most of you know, I’m not that big a fan of historical fiction. It’s very rarely a hit and very often a miss when I do try to read any his-fic but sometimes people keep recommending a certain book and I get.. curious about it anyway? That’s exactly what happened with The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Off the top of my head, I remember May, Destiny and Sofii recommending this book. Destiny already had me putting a physical copy on my birthday wish list, and then May pretty much stated I should read it sooner rather than later. Still don’t know when that’ll be, but.. eventually! [Especially since I now OWN a copy!]
A book or genre so outside of your comfort zone that you’ll probably never give it a chance:
I have to somewhat use Destiny’s answer for this. I’m simply not big on religion in books so Christian fiction would definitely be something I’d rather stay clear off. Not only Christian, but.. probably anything that’s.. overly religious? I really don’t know how to explain this properly. Sigh. Also monstrous horrors. Don’t think I’ll ever attempt horror novels where people are getting dismembered or torn apart or tortured in very explicit ways and stuff like that. Yeah, no.
THE NEXT VICTIMS
I honestly believe tagging people for this is evil, because it’s.. not an easy one to answer the questions of? Nevertheless, I’m going to tag Marie, Lu, May, Siobhan, Mandy and Sha and Noriko! If I haven’t tagged you, but you still want to do this tag: consider yourselves tagged anyway! And if you were not amused by my answers, you’re tagged as well to prove you can do better. Like. Just saying. [Weird mood continues.]
I felt the same way about sci-fi, actually! It changed for me partially when I read Slaughterhouse-Five and fully after watching the reimagined series Battlestar Galactica. There was this interview clip with Edward James Olmos about how he said he would quit if aliens ever showed up, and I think of that a lot because I had the same misconception about the genre.

The synopsis of that one does NOT speak to me at all, haha! But good on you that the book and that series ended up changing your mind somewhat. It’s a hard thing to do once you have a certain opinion on a genre – at least I know it is for me, haha.

Yea I had to read it for AP English and wasn’t excited about it… but it is… weird and not what you would think. Definitely not for everyone haha

Well, I’m definitely not eager to pick it up myself, haha!

I was very excited to see you doing a tag… until I saw how painful it was… and that you had tagged Mandy and I… *sobs*
I don’t know how you got through this. These are hard questions!! You don’t like much historical fiction??? Expect me to now recommend a bunch of hist. fic. to you! I don’t have a bunch either, tbh, but a well done historical fiction will have the BEST imagery and I love great imagery in a book. (Check out Ruta Sepetys!)
And… I am a friend… who recommended Exit Plans for Teenage Freaks! Which you will be reading, yes?? Although it *is* something you would normally pick up. I’m sooooo excited to see what you think.

*evil cackling* But I know you guys will have fun figuring out your answers together so there’s that, right?! 😀
I had to wrack my brain for some of these questions for sure, haha! Oh dear lord.. Okay, I read the blurbs of both “Between Shades of Gray” and “Salt to the Sea” and my brain is going “NOPE” on both of them so.. ._.
YES.YES.YES. I WILL. I PROMISE.

Okay, you have me there. We will indeed have fun scrambling through our combined bookshelves for something that can match these prompts.
Oookay, maybe not. Out of the Easy, maybe? What turns you off hist. fic in specific?

See!
That one sounds waaay better! Honestly, I think it’s the whole history-aspect itself? If something screams “history” too loudly, I immediately want to run off or something. Probably has a lot to do with me hating the subject at school. :’)

I wasn’t the biggest history fan either. For me it’s the *story*: like, if a historical fiction book has a good story to it, then I’m in. So I think exactly what you’re saying, haha.

I legit laughed when I saw your ping. 😂 I need some to time think up my response, but I wholeheartedly agree with IT. I WILL NOT READ THAT. Nope. Nuh huh.
Thank you for the tag, deary.

Hahaha, you’re welcome!
Ugh. Don’t. I somewhat regret spending so much time on the thing, but on the other hand I can go like “I READ THAT MONSTER OF A BOOK AND I HATE IT.” :’)

Fairyloot? Because I also got that one there. I haven’t gone into one of those yet, I need a lot more time to get used to it. But I like fantasy more, so I’ll probably stick to it more.

Yes!
Same; fantasy and contemporary will always be my go-to genres but once in a while, my brain wants to challenge itself, hah. 🙂

We had the exact same experience with The Illuminae Files! I was kind of wary coming in, because sci-fi, but now I’m slowly getting into the genre more. I have Skyward at home to read.

I got that one in one of my sub boxes, haha! I guess it all depends on what kind of sci-fi and how it’s done, really. I still cannot handle the overly scientific ones where there’s waaay too many science-y things explained. :’)

Ugh, IT. UGH. UGHHHHH. I feel like I’m never going to get over what a disappointment that book was – well, you know, the part I actually read. :’)

Which proves why I will ALWAYS down-vote King. Or at least until I’ve read something of his I ended up loving. :’)

All these books are out of my comfort zone as well, you are so brave. I ‘ve seen so much of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo on twitter that they’ve almost convinced me to read it too!

Funny how seeing a book around like that makes us curious to read it, even when it’s not our usual thing!

Exactly. Some kind of peer pressure, in a way, but still..

I understand your doubts about The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo for being a historical fiction, especially because I don’t usually read the genre either, but I made the exception with this book and it was SO worth it! I’m a simple human so I have to recommend it to you again lol, beside I’m super excited to know your thoughts about it 😅 💕

Gaaah. Well this motivates me even more to pick it up, haha! Can’t say it’ll be this year but hopefully next year. 😀 ❤

This tag sounds quite hard to do hahaha thank you for tagging me Kathy! 🙂
I also have Evelyn Hugo on my TBR and I can’t wait to read it – I just keep hearing so much praise for it everywhere and it makes me both nervous and impatient to get to it 🙂

You and your sister if you want to torture her as well, haha! 😀
Ha, same. But I’m wary as well since it’s not my usual genre and.. yeah.. We’ll see how it goes. 😀

That’s a GREAT idea hahaha 😛

Oh, yea, I’m with you… wouldn’t read religious stuff for sure.

Hahaha, love your answers, Kathy! I’m not fond of reading any fictional religious book that feels preachy. I love reading religious nonfiction at times, but fiction??? Ehhh. Lol.

Thank you! I barely read any nonfiction, so it doesn’t really matter what I read when it comes to that aspect, haha.

No religion for me or politics

Me too, I can’t read anything that deals with religion that’s preachy. If religion is incorporated into a science fiction or fantasy story and it’s part of that world and doesn’t PREACH, then I’m on board. But otherwise…
LikeLiked by 2 people
Point! But, that’s like.. very often part of an imaginative world and that religion is often based on ones we know or ones that existed but it’s not like “HERE. RELIGION. IN YOUR FACE.” like some books can be.. :’)

I relate to you about having a stigma against scifi. I find scifi as a genre super daunting because of how technical it can be but illuminae was definitely an exception for me too 🙂

Right?! I actually admire people who can dive into scifi all the time. I love discovering different fantasy worlds, but scifi would be rough on my brain I reckon.

I’m with you on not liking super religious books–they just don’t jive with me. This was a fun post, thanks for sharing!
