GETTING OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE IS HARD.

Apparently Destiny @ Howling Libraries felt like torturing me by dragging me out of my comfort zone? Truly, I was thinking “Oh boy, this looks like torture” when I was reading her answers to these questions. I didn’t even know she tagged me yet at that point. Just imagine my face when I found out.

Okay, it wasn’t that bad but still. It took me a while to figure out my answers so I hope you enjoy them? Somewhat? And if not, you’re tagged already to prove you can do better, HA! [I’m obviously in a very weird mood today.. Monday’s are FUN. Not.]

THE ONE MAJOR RULE

You have to pick ONE GENRE that you frequently read about… and then, you can’t use ANY books from that genre while answering the questions!

Let the torture begin, right? When it comes to my reading, it’s honestly a toss-up between ya contemporary and ya fantasy so.. I don’t know..? Let’s make the torture even more real and go with both?

THE TORTURE

A book that is an exception when it comes to genres or elements you don’t typically like:

There is one thing that I typically don’t really like, and that’s anything history-related in books. I’ve been trying some historical fiction though, and I have to admit there are some books out there I actually ended up liking. I still haven’t figured out what aspects work and don’t work for me but some of the novels I enjoyed so far that have historical elements are A Sky Painted Gold and Stalking Jack the Ripper.

A book you enjoyed from a genre you previously held some stigma against:

Gah, this is going to sound awful for some but I have to go with The Illuminae Files on this one. I really had something against anything science fiction-related and that purely had to do with my mom’s addiction to sci-fi movies. I loathed those during my entire childhood and hated all the alien-stuff that looked so bloody and awful. In my brain, science fiction equaled aliens and gore and.. well.. let’s say I’m thrilled the entire book community hyped these books so I ended up giving them a shot myself. Even had me trying out more and more science fiction novels since! Although I’m still staying clear of the movies. Too soon.

A book you didn’t know was out of your comfort zone until you started reading it:

Well, this is an easy one and the one answer I could already think of before I even started writing this post. IT by Stephen King is the huge winner. All the bullying, abuse and.. certain other events in this book shook me to my core. I still can’t believe I actually managed to finish this book, but I did. And I’m never, ever reading it again. Ever.

Pick a friend who motivates you to pick up books you might not normally be interested in—is there a book they convinced you to give a try?

There honestly isn’t really a specific person like that? Simple reason: I’m pretty set on making up my own mind about books. If people tell me not to read a book for certain reasons, there’s more chance of me listening than the same people telling me to definitely read that book because I’ll love it for sure. I’m weird, right? No, I guess not.

A book that is out of your comfort zone, but you would like to read:

As most of you know, I’m not that big a fan of historical fiction. It’s very rarely a hit and very often a miss when I do try to read any his-fic but sometimes people keep recommending a certain book and I get.. curious about it anyway? That’s exactly what happened with The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Off the top of my head, I remember May, Destiny and Sofii recommending this book. Destiny already had me putting a physical copy on my birthday wish list, and then May pretty much stated I should read it sooner rather than later. Still don’t know when that’ll be, but.. eventually! [Especially since I now OWN a copy!]

A book or genre so outside of your comfort zone that you’ll probably never give it a chance:

I have to somewhat use Destiny’s answer for this. I’m simply not big on religion in books so Christian fiction would definitely be something I’d rather stay clear off. Not only Christian, but.. probably anything that’s.. overly religious? I really don’t know how to explain this properly. Sigh. Also monstrous horrors. Don’t think I’ll ever attempt horror novels where people are getting dismembered or torn apart or tortured in very explicit ways and stuff like that. Yeah, no.

THE NEXT VICTIMS
