TTT: MOVIES that remind me of Halloween!

Top Ten Tuesday

Two weeks ago, I talked about some – in my opinion – dark and scary books. This time, I’m going to talk about some movies that make me think of Halloween. One because it legitimately freaked me out for weeks, another one because of it’s dark atmosphere and others because they simply gave me those Halloween-vibes.

Today’s topic is supposed to be “Bookstores / Libraries I’ve Always Wanted to Visit” and, as I said at the start of the month, I’m ignoring that. Today is all about “Movies That Make Me Think of Halloween”

All images link back to the movie’s IMDb’s.

Let’s start with the one movie that had me freaked out and paranoid for weeks on end.

It Follows - Movie Poster by blantonl98“For nineteen-year-old Jay, Autumn should be about school, boys and week-ends out at the lake. But after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter, she finds herself plagued by strange visions and the inescapable sense that someone, something, is following her. Faced with this burden, Jay and her friends must find a way to escape the horrors, that seem to be only a few steps behind.”

I am not even ashamed to admit how paranoid I got after watching It Follows. I saw it in the smallest room of the theater with approximately 50 other people. You can’t really distract yourself during the creepy moments that way – it was sold-out so you couldn’t run off either – and I got pulled into the movie badly. At the time I didn’t really care all that much, since it’s a good thing when a movie does that to you, right? Not. I constantly checked whether I was being followed the days after. I didn’t sleep well for weeks – I literally dreamed of that thing. Just thinking about it makes my skin crawl. I don’t think I’ll be watching it again, but for the horror-lovers out there.. If you haven’t seen this one yet, do let me know how much it freaked you out!

In a castle high on top of a hill lives an inventor’s greatest creation – Edward, a near-complete person. The creator died before he could finish Edward’s hands; instead, he is left with metal scissors for hands. Since then, he has lived alone, until a kind lady called Peg discovers him and welcomes him into her home. At first, everyone welcomes him into the community, but soon things begin to take a change for the worse.”

Way less creepy – more not creepy at all – is Edward Scissorhands. I love the dark atmosphere of this movie. Even though it’s not at all a scary one, you can still feel those vibes and it makes this movie pretty special to me. I wouldn’t expect any less from a Tim Burton-movie anyway. I’m also a huge fan of Johnny Depp’s acting, so that doesn’t hurt either!

Van Helsing (2004)Corpse Bride (2005)Steve Buscemi, Adam Sandler, CeeLo Green, Kevin James, and Selena Gomez in Hotel Transylvania (2012)Danny Elfman and Chris Sarandon in The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Other movies that give me all the Halloween-vibes, but aren’t necessarily Halloween-related are Van HelsingCorpse BrideHotel Transylvania and – of course – The Nightmare Before Christmas. I honestly love how the latter has “Christmas” in its title, but gives me way more Halloween-vibes than Christmas-ones. Van Helsing does have a bit of creepiness to it – I think? It’s been a while.. – but the others are pretty much.. amazing for all ages, I guess? I love animated movies like these so if any of you know of one I should check out, let me know!

What are movies that absolutely freaked you out?
Any other movies that give you Halloween-vibes every time you watch them?

  1. I love Hotel Transylvania (sp?) so much. I saw it randomly with some friends (not that I wouldn’t have seen it otherwise) and the movie wonderfully humourous and themed. The sequel… not so much. I wish there hadn’t been one. It was alright but kind of forced. And I neeed to rewatch Nightmare Before Christmas.

    1. I remember putting the sequel on when I was cleaning once so I didn’t really take in a whole lot of it. Might have to rewatch it to see how I actually feel about it. Did see there’s a third one out [or coming out?] so.. maybe that one’ll be better? Probably not if you think the second one shouldn’t have happened in the first place, hah.
Yes you do! I’m hoping to rewatch it myself but I’m waiting for the weather to be.. less.. Summer-y. :’)

    2. The sequel was alright, but I don’t think it stood up to how great the first Hotel Transylvania was. If I could put it simply, I can remember the first movie very clearly, but the second one is easily forgettable. Is the third one out? Hmm. Yes, I just looked it up. I didn’t bother with that one (a cruise? it lost all the original spooky fun vibes).

Yes! You need all the cold and fall feeling for Halloween movies.

    3. Mhm. Funny how books usually get better after the first installment and movies tend to.. do the reverse? I don’t know.. Feels like that sometimes.
A cruise? Seriously? I didn’t even know that and now I’m not at all eager to watch the thing. :’)

  2. This may be kind of an unpopular opinion but I’m not a big fan of Nightmare Before Christmas x:
It Follows is super creepy though!

    1. You’re definitely not the only one! I’m planning a rewatch this week simply because.. the time is right! At least, I’m planning on it if the weather cools down a bit because it feels like Summer right now and that’s just wrong.. :/
