Review: One Of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus

Review

Hi Munchworms!

One of Us Is LyingToday I bring you my review of One Of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus!

Pay close attention and you might solve this.

On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention.
Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule.
Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess.
Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing.
Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher.
And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High s notorious gossip app.
Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention Simon’s dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn’t an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday, he’d planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they the perfect patsies for a killer who’s still on the loose?
Everyone has secrets, right? What really matters is how far you would go to protect them.

This book reminded me so much of Pretty Little Liars but with one aspect that made it a hundred times better! You actually find out who’s behind it all!
Seriously, I stopped watching PLL because that little thing frustrated the hell out of me…

But, let’s start at the beginning. And the beginning is simple: You get sucked right in. There’s no escaping. As soon as Simon’s dead, the snowball starts rolling and rolling. Down it goes! And, guess what? You’re simply stuck in it.
I couldn’t help myself, had to keep reading. I just had to find out what had happened, who was behind it. Who was lying? Who wasn’t? Why did they do this?

A couple of words is all it’ll take to make everything in my life Before and After.

When it comes to the writing, it read fluently. It really did. One Of Us Is Lying isn’t a page-turner because of the story alone, the writing also does the trick.
I did have one problem with it though, and that’s the voice of the characters. Although Cooper’s voice stood out at times, I often had the feeling that they all sounded the same as well. I honestly had to go back sometimes to find out who’s POV I was in at that moment. When you’re using different POV’s – and especially with such a diverse set of characters – you shouldn’t have that.

All in all I did enjoy the story, but it wasn’t a five star-read for me. If you enjoy mysteries, however, I’d definitely recommend this one. Or if you simply need a book you wouldn’t want to put down, I’d say this is the one for the job as well!

4 / 5!

For the munches, I was going to take a picture of some bananas but… Honestly, only the people who’ve read this book and remembered that little scene would get it… [I had to laugh out loud at the time and I was at work? Oops.]

Have you read One Of Us Is Lying? Did you figure it out? Or were you completely mistaken?

Yep

I paid full-price for this novel. All opinions are entirely my own. I’m not being compensated in any way.

  1. It was a 5 stars for me and it will be on my “bests 2017”. I don’t know why but … what I loved most were the secrets we get to uncover and the characters developments.

    1. Although I enjoyed it, I don’t think it’ll be on my “best of”-list for this year. [That reminds me that I should maybe start working on that soon..]
The secrets were definitely an intriguing part! As for character development, I have to say that Nate’s stuck out with me. But, then again, bad boys. Always bad boys. :’)

  2. This was a book I really enjoyed, and normally it is a book I would have walked right past. But since I really started more frequent posts on my blog, I’ve tried to diversify my reading just a bit more. I can honestly say that I flew through this book because I needed to try and fit all the pieces together and figure out what happened.

    1. It isn’t a book I would’ve picked up myself either, but blogging really does get you out of your comfort zone sometimes. I’d heard so many things about it that I got intrigued and wanted to read it after all. Glad I did!

  3. Yes, I’ve read it and loved it.. I kind of had a feeling about the killer but not for a long time though (something was mentioned and then it got me thinking about it..) so it was great. I didn’t have any problems with the POV’s though but I liked them all so much I didn’t want anyone to be the bad guy!

    1. I had a feeling at the start and kind of stuck with it. Although I had my doubts sometimes, but then stopped having those and then the doubts came back, haha.
Same! All those characters grew on me and I was like “Please, don’t let it be one of them..”

  4. Great review! I agree about the voices of the characters, I think it’s really hard to write a book with multiple perspectives, and it’s a pretty short book too! But I definitely was sucked in, I just HAD to know what had happened!!
