Review: A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

Time for another review, but first…

Thank the skies that I finally read this book! I cannot believe myself, thinking that I’ve let it lying around here for so long. Such an awesome book, an awesome world, a completely amazing author. And it was just.. sitting there catching dust? I’ve been hating myself ever since I was about 100 pages in A Court of Thorns and Roses because of that.

Realizing that I’ve heard many people say that the first book is the lesser of the bunch… Well, honestly, I’m thrilled! If the sequel is going to be even better, I’m not leaving my apartment until I read all three books. Ha!
So I’m going to apologize now in case I’d suddenly disappear… Okay, no. Not happening.

A while back, “ACOTAR” kept popping up everywhere. I couldn’t for the life of me understand what people were talking about. So when I finally had the guts to ask someone, I just added all the books to my TBR on Goodreads.
Then came the day… That fated day that I saw it laying there. Beautifully laying there, calling out to me. Yelling my name so loudly that my boyfriend was already giving me the stink eye before I even picked it up. He knows me too well, haha.
But that cover looked so pretty, so fitting to the title and as thus inviting. I really wanted to buy it and so… I did – doh.

Okay, no, I read the synopsis first and then bought it, haha.

Feyre is a huntress.

She thinks nothing of slaughtering a wolf to capture its prey. But, like all mortals, she fears what lingers mercilessly beyond the forest. And she will learn that taking the life of a magical creature comes at a high price…

Imprisoned in an enchanted court in her enemy’s kingdom, Feyre is free to roam but forbidden to escape. Her captor’s body bears the scars of fighting, and his face is always masked – but his piercing stare draws her ever closer. As Feyre’s feelings for Tamlin begin to burn through every warning she’s been told about his kind, an ancient, wicked shadow grows.

Feyre must find a way to break a spell, or lose her heart forever.

And that did it for me. The first thing to pop in my mind was “yay, a Beauty and the Beast-retelling!” I have to admit that I’ve created a weakness for all retellings ever since reading The Lunar Chronicles.

When I actually started reading it, the thorns at the beginning of every chapter already added an extra vibe. It fitted perfectly well and – honestly – was a good indicator when a chapter was about to end in case I had to go do something else.

I could fill this review with all the good and great things about this book, but I’m going to keep it short and simple. I’ve fallen in love with Sarah J. Maas’ writing style, with her characters, with the world she created and – of course – with the odd paragraph where sparks would fly everywhere. Those lightly sexual scenes were an unexpected but nice extra, haha.
Completely losing myself in this book, having no clue what time it is and not wanting the book to end… Definitely a good book!

“Do you ever stop being so serious and dull?”
“Do you ever stop being such a prick?” I snapped back.
Dead—really, truly, I should have been dead for that.
But Lucien grinned at me. “Much better.”

Oh, did I mention I love books that make me laugh out loud? Because this one did!

The only minor thing was that I sometimes felt detached from Feyre all of a sudden. I don’t know if it was me, or if the writing got more distant – maybe I just got distracted during those chapters – I honestly don’t know. There were just those few moment when I couldn’t really connect to Feyre anymore.
But that really is the only less positive thing I have to say about this book.

For that, I’ll be giving A Court of Thorns and Roses 4 / 5.

Oh, and there are munches this time! The kind of munches of which you just keep eating absentmindedly, until you reach in that box and notice you already ate the last piece. Pizza! Sorry for the not-so-pretty picture, but I was hungry at the time and just wanted to dig in, haha.
